Today’s beginner workout in the garage

I had the privilege of training two CrossFit beginners at 5:30 tonight. Teaching the deadlift is my favorite thing! We worked on that (with kettlebells and barbells), as well as squats and push-ups, and then did a modified "Chelsea": every minute on the minute, do three squats, two push-ups, and five kettlebell deadlifts. This went on for 20 minutes.

My trainees did well at pushing their speed just a little while focusing on good form. A very good first CrossFit workout. When you're doing an "EMOTM" (every minute...) workout, if you find yourself getting less than twenty seconds of rest each minute, it's probably time to do fewer reps each round. We did not need to make that change today. Each set took both people between 30 and 34 seconds. This never changed for the whole twenty minutes (so next time they get a few more reps tucked into each set!).
