Paleo Dining (Out)

Many of you have wondered how to eat out while still maintaining a Paleo lifestyle. It is possible to socialize with friends, enjoy new restaurants, and still stick with your diet preferences.
Here are a few tips:

1) Review the menu online so you can see what your choices will be in advance.
I sometimes find it difficult to focus on the details of the menu while dining out with friends, as I am distracted by the conversation rather than the nitty gritty of the menu choices. Find one or two entrees that are appealing to you and are within the boundaries of your diet. Most places will gladly substitute potatoes, cheese, and leave off any flour or bread products on your dish as long as you talk to you server.

2) Ask for what you want
If you see a piece of fish or meat that you’d like but the sides aren’t in your diet plan- see what other options are available. Servers are incredibly helpful if you ask for their help! A simple, “I only want meat/ fish with veggies” can you help me find something on the menu or can you talk to the chef about what he can do can be very effective.

3) Think out of the box
You may be used to getting a certain dish at a restaurant- and that dish if not Paleo friendly. Explore the other options! You might be surprised at what you find.

4) Avoid looking at the dessert menu
There is nothing on here that is going to work if you avoiding sugar/ sweeteners, dairy or grain. Have a cup of herbal tea :)

5) Be flexible and kind to yourself
If it is a special occasion or you are looking for a “treat” choose wisely and don’t go overboard. You may be surprised if you have been eating ‘clean’ for awhile introducing a non Paleo food may cause some digestive disturbances.  Most importantly, get back to your diet plan as soon as possible!
